Manufactured urgency
Countdown, “low stock”, “limited offer”: what pushes you to buy before comparing.
What you see
A countdown at the top of the page, a “Low Stock” label, “only a few left”, “offer valid until tonight”, sometimes a sale banner that never changes.
How to check
- Reload the page in a private window, then again the next day: does the timer start from zero again?
- Check the page’s history on archive.org: has the same limited offer been displayed for weeks?
- See whether the product is sold elsewhere with no visible limit.
Takeaway
Real urgency exists (end of a product line, dated sales). Urgency that renews itself at every visit is not urgency: note the date of your observations.
